Since the advent of organ transplantation in the 1950s, transplants have given thousands of people a new lease on life. But demand far exceeds supply, and in the U.S., an average of 19 patients a day die while on organ transplant waitlists. How should our society decide who receives these precious resources? Should priority go to the sickest patients, those who have waited the longest, or those who would gain the most years of life? Dr. Roberts will outline the current policies for organ distribution, and explore the ethics of alternate models.
