Sexuality after Transplantation (Lecture)
Friday, September 26, 2008
12:00 pm - 513 Parnassus Avenue, Room N-217, San Francisco
John Chamberlain, MD, Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry
Nancy L. Ascher, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair, UCSF Department of Surgery - Moderator

Patients who successfully undergo a transplant are excited to return to a normal, active life. Yet immunosuppressant medications that help prevent rejection of a transplanted organ can have side effects, including impacts on patients’ sexuality. Dr. Chamberlain and Dr. Ascher will discuss sexuality following transplantation, including libido, self-image and sexual functioning. They will also discuss specific issues facing pediatric transplant patients as they enter puberty and grow into adulthood. Dr. Chamberlain and Dr. Ascher will review treatment options for sexual difficulties, and will also engage the audience in a lively discussion about how patients can effectively talk about these personal and often difficult topics with their health care team.
