Biography

Dr. Behrends earned his M.D. at the University of Gottingen Medical School (Germany) in 1996. He completed an anesthesiology residency at the University of Essen in 2003, followed by postdoctoral training in pathophysiology at the same institution . At the University of California, San Francisco, Dr. Behrends was a Visiting Assistant Professor in Anesthesiology from 2004-06, and became a permanent Assistant Clinical Professor in 2006. Dr. Behrends splits his clinical time between Moffit and Mt. Zion Hospitals, as well as the UCSF Ambulatory Surgery Center, and is also involved in the training and supervision of anesthesiology residents on a daily basis. Having started researching under the mentorship of Dr. Claus Niemann in 2004, Dr. Behrends is now a primary investigator in basic science research on the pathophysiology of hepatic and renal ischemia/reperfusion injury.
