Biography

Lee Ann Baxter-Lowe, PhD, dip.ABHI is the Director of the UCSF Immunogenetics and Transplantation Laboratory and a Professor in Residence in the UCSF Medical School Department of Surgery. Dr. Baxter-Lower has more than 20 years experience in histocompatibility testing and transplantation research. Her research in characterization of HLA polymorphism and investigation of the relationship between HLA matching and transplant outcomes has been translated into state-of-the-art services in the Immunogenetics and Transplantation Laboratory. Her research involving mixed chimerism and microchimerism has provided the basis for sensitive tests that are now available as a clinical service.

Dr. Baxter-Lowe has led the Immunogenetics and Transplantation Laboratory since 1998. Under her guidance, the ITL has developed into a world leader in the most sophisticated HLA typing methods. The laboratory has expanded its test menu, introduced new technology including bead arrays, dramatically increased clinical consultation, revamped the quality systems program, and attracted referrals from other academic institutions.

Dr. Baxter-Lowe's other accomplishments include more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications, the first report describing use of high resolution molecular HLA typing for the selection of an unrelated bone marrow donor, patents for methods for molecular HLA typing and characterization of HLA polymorphism, including discovery of many HLA alleles. She has served in leadership positions for the development of national standards for histocompatibility testing rincipal investigator or co-investigator for numerous basic and translational research projects.
