Laurie Carlson MSN, RN, Earns Nephrology Nursing Journal Writer’s Award

For her publication "Clinical Management of the HIV-Positive Kidney Transplant Recipient," Carlson was awarded the Nephrology Nursing Journal Writer's Award for Clinical Practice. As Transplant Study Coordinator at University of California, San Francisco, Carlson provides compassionate service to patients with kidney disease, with a focus on patients who are HIV-Positive. Carlon's article provides an overview of transplantation in patients with HIV infection and describes the evolving clinical management of HIV-infected transplant recipients.

Just a few years ago, people with HIV in need of kidney and liver transplants faced daunting odds. Today, because of pioneering research at UCSF, transplantation is now an option. UCSF's Transplant Service achieves excellent results even when treating the most high-risk patients, including those with HIV.
